Suppose someone got lucky and found a Lincoln pattern cent, other than the Aluminums that were not supposed to be released. Or suppose it was likely a pattern cent, but the mint had no record of it, unlike the 1974 Aluminums. Would secret service confiscate this cent on behalf of the mint? Or would they let it go?

If it wasn't issued, and left the mint by theft or intentional misuse of the mint's distribution channels, I'm sure it would be subject to Secret Service seizure.

It seems that they aren't consistent is what coins they are interested in. The Sacagawea/Quarter mules would be an example of this. From what I've read, I think that they could be confiscated, but so far they haven't acted.

If suspected that the 'find' was a die trial pattern,
the first task would be to prove if a private fantasy strike or genuine.

Almost impossible to do that, if there are no Mint records relating to it.

The Mint's generally pretty good at keeping records of official patterns and trial strikes. If the "mint had no record of it", then it likely wasn't an official pattern, and not done at the Mint, and thus not liable to government seizure, since it was never government property to begin with. Unless, of course, it's seized as a counterfeit coin (like the NORFED Liberty Dollars).

One interesting case is the 1913 Hawaii Five-O nickel. The nickel should not exist. The coin should not exist, and was probably made illegally, but the mint could not prove that. https://stacksbowers.com/sbpressrel...rivate-sale/
