During my career I traveled from Houston to Lagos and Port Harcourt on business between 2006 and 2012. Each time I would always exchange some dollars for naira after I arrived. During that time, the exchange rate was about 135-150 naira to the dollar (now it's about 430 naira to the dollar).

In Lagos, the need for local currency was mainly to pay the occasional bribe at the airport to help move things along, the rare visit to a restaurant in the city, or for paying the bar tab at the hotel if we exceeded the low expense limit on alcohol allowed by our Nigerian hosts .

In Port Harcourt we were required to stay in our company's residential compound for security reasons, but the onsite restaurant was just awful. However, the residential compound for the French oil company Total was adjacent to ours, and while their restaurant was very good they required payment in naira. It was well worth the walk, the time spent getting a visitor's pass at the security gate between the compounds, and the extra trouble we had to go through when filing our expenses!

I thought I'd share some of the interesting currency I put aside during my travels there.

20 naira note, 2007. (Front) Portrait of General Murtala R. Muhammed. (Back) Portrait of Ladi Kwali, a Nigerian potter, ceramicist and educator.

50 naira note, 2010. Commemorates Nigeria's 50th anniversary of independence. (Front) Four portraits. (Back) Fishermen.

100 naira note, 2007. (Front) Portrait of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. (Back) Zuma Rock, a natural monolith located in the western part of Nigeria near Abuja.

200 naira note, 2008. (Front) Portrait of Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello. (Back) Two cows and agricultural products.

1000 naira note, 2006. (Front) Portraits of Alhaji Aliyu Mai-Bornu and Dr. Clement Isong. (Back) Central Bank building.

Thanks, hfjacinto and Nycstlrr! Unfortunately I don't have the 5 naira note, but I never even saw one of those. The 10 naira note was given to me by a Nigerian colleague since I never came across one of those, either. Of course, during those years 10 naira was equivalent to around 7 U.S. cents...

Nice examples!

It's always great to acquire a few examples from your travels (or work) or for whatever reason you were there. I still kick myself (to this day) for not picking up notes while living in Jamaica (2 years) & St. Lucia (9 months). In my defence, I remember often being annoyed how I only got a 500 Jamaican dollars note or a $20 ECD note (which were a bit hard to sock away at the time) in decent shape (EF to AU). I never seemed to get a lower denom in UNC.

When I visited the Philippines for 1 month most of the notes I got were rags so I just couldn't justify keeping them & then bought a bunch of UNC as soon as I got home. I also got 2 or 3 replacements in the 1000 Pesos (no 20 Pesos replacements- only high denoms!)

Here's my only note from Nigeria, a P-8 1:

Thanks, jbuck and walk2dwater! While I normally kept notes from places I traveled to on business, I didn't keep any pre-euro currency from the Netherlands even though I lived there for 5 years! And I only kept one 5 pound note from Scotland during my years living there, and that was only a leftover from a business trip I made there after I moved back to the States... I still kick myself for that, even though I can get the notes cheap on eBay.

While living in the Netherlands, some of my Dutch friends would pick up notes for me in a couple countries we did business with but where I wasn't allowed to travel to or participate in work for, such as Libya.

By the way, walk2dwater, I like that 1 pound note. I've been saying for years I'm happy with the collection of notes I've accumulated during my business years, but I may just have to start expanding on that a bit. So many of the world banknotes are simply beautiful and it's starting to become hard to resist, even though that voice in my head keeps telling me "NO MORE NEW AREAS OF COLLECTING!"...

Boko Haram terrorism activity in the Northeast of Nigeria and corruption are the reasons for this.
Inflation now getting out of control in Nigeria.
For this reason, the old Pound denominations more take my interest.

I made that same trip in 1979 when I worked for WODECO. ( Fluor) I'm sorry I didn't save any currency. I like yours very much.

I hear you. This happened to me in 2006. An error collector friend became a World dealer (he sold most of his errors for world stock). I thought he was bonkers. I bought a 10 /- Lady Laverly Irish note just to get him off my back. However, looking back, I wish I just listened to him as so many nations were dirt cheap then. But that same voice "No more areas of collecting" won out so I didn't succumb to the world bug till 2013 on my first trip to Europe. After that, I was "all in," like a bad Texas Hold'em game.

@walk2dwater, that's my problem - I learned long ago that when I tell myself "I'll just pick up a few interesting examples, and that's it", I'm telling myself a blatant lie...
