I purchased this large cent awhile back off of the e-bay. It unfortunately is very corroded but the price was less than when it was sold on heritage in 2014 so I decided to buy it. This is currently my oldest coin. Also interesting pedigree "mervis collection". Us copper is not my expertise but seems to be a tougher variety. Not my photos they were taken from heritage.

i dont know a ton about Adam Mervis the person. his collection is one of the better large cent sets ever assembled. the set was built over a relatively short period of time through Hannigans rare coins. he was the first person to pay over a million dollars for a large cent, buying the VG-10 S-79 from the Dan Holmes sale for ~$1.2m.

S-51 is tough. there is only one coin that grades better than eac vf. I dont have one for my set yet. Listed as an R-5-, there are estimated to be a bit less than 75 examples on the planet. there are several on ebay right now so its not an impossible task to acquire one. I like the obverse die crack on this variety. a diagnostic like that means that a high percentage of the examples get attributed and scrutinized compared to a less distinguishable variety.

while your coin is corroded I like that the damage is even and that all of the design elements are visible. it would be a keeper for my collection
