I have been completing my prestige proof collection and come across an oddity. There is a 1983 set I am looking at that is in a light gray '86-97 felt style holder/case (as opposed to the typical brown leather case with snap clasp.) My first thought was that someone put the inner lens into a different sets holder, but on the spine it has 1983 embossed on it that looks proper not a home done modification.
Was the 1983 set released in 2 different style holders?
These are pics from the listing.

all my sets are in leather

Huh, I thought only the '83 and '84 we're in leather with the snap clasp, the later sets I have only seen with a felt or felt like covered box. Are your 86-97 sets also in leather?

It would be interesting if there is a full set in each type but I have not come across any mention online of alternate styles.

I agree. For what it is worth, the three I have ('88, '90, '91) are felt like the one shown above.

The more I look, the more I think they stuck a 1983 lens into a 1991 case, and added the 1983 date to the side.

Now I'll have to check this when I get home to verify, but, I think that is not possible as the 1983 and 84 sets are much smaller than the rest (1986-97).

That is the colour of my 1991 case with the Mount Rushmore dollar and half dollar. Which tells me it is not the lens from that set, because of the extra half dollar. They would have to do a unique case-lens combo to throw you off, but not sure if that the the real 1983 lens as I cannot compare.

Yes it could be direct change over with no problems:

But, does the grey felt case presented above look like the 1991 case:

Also, is the plastic insert grey as well? I cannot tell from the photo.

I'm only missing '83, '91, and '97 to be complete, just wanted to make sure there weren't any legitimate alternate set styles released.
I could see someone putting the coin lens into a newer outer holder to make it match with the rest of the set. Guess it's what's important to you, overall aesthetics vs original packaging. While I would prefer that they were all uniform size and material, I am definitely in the OGP category in this regard, I will only pick up pieces that are fully original and complete (with the exception of my home made 2015 LESP.)
