Does anyone have any background information on this coin, especially if it was planned before the death of Queen Elizabeth? I just received this coin and it is not only a beautiful coin, but because of the maple leaf design (Canada) and the black rhodium plating is a great memorial to The Queen, much more so imho than the toonie. I'm curious if it was planned as a memorial or if the black plating was already the plan for this year and the timing just worked out that way.

I don't claim to follow the Mint closely enough to guarantee that I see every one of its press releases, so I easily could have missed one or more, but...

The Mint issued its first black rhodium-plated incuse Silver Maple Leaf coin in 2020. I'd hazard a guess and say that the 2023 coin was planned before QEII's death as the next iteration of the coin - the fact the timing of its release may have taken on added significance is just coincidence IMO.

@commems Thank you for your response. I was thinking along those lines but I wanted to shake the tree of knowledge a bit and get more informed opinions. I do think it worked out as a beautiful memorial. The 2020 is the only one of these I wasn't able to get.
