Hey guys! Ive got a Gold 1959 Mexican 20 Veinte Pesos coin , and in the two tiny stars you can see two letters, a 'G' in the left star,,,,and a 'P' in the right star?
ive searched everywhere online to find out anything about it but had no luck,my coin is not the only coin with it, ive seen many pics online with the same letters.
Could possibly be the mints assayers initials? coins designer?
Maybe someone on here can help with the mystery?
thanks!

Very interesting question @lib. The image on numista doesn't have the letters in the stars (https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pi...15037.html), but does talk about a restrike of the 1959-dated pieces. I wonder if the initials were added on the restrikes.

Thanks for the reply, I don't think it has anything to do with restrikes , as I've seen these initials on lots of non-restrike years. I'm just really surprised I can't easily find any mention of it on any of the pages where they discuss this coin , like when they describe the coin they point out all the features,,, except those little letters.

I looked and could not find anything. Looks like some of the restrikes do not have the GP. Interesting question for sure.

I have one of these, cool coins. You could try going to the source, the Mexico mint and ask them. Below I think is their web site. I tried clicking the English version but could not get it to work. At bottom right of main page is contacto email. Maybe they have some reps that can read English, will research and get back to you.

G and P in the stars, I will look into that... I had noticed my coins had an inscription in the stars, but I don't have a loupe! Could it stand for "Gramos" and "Pureza"? (grams and purity). Or "Gramos" and "Peso"? (grams of weight).
