Afternoon,

Bit of help required here please. The mother of a good friend of mine recently passed away and my friend called to me have a look at some coins that he'd discovered whilst sorting out her personal effects.

I know nothing about foreign coins, but if anyone can tell me a bit about this coin please i.e. if it looks real and is it worth anything, we'd appreciate it. Thanks

Weight 27g
Diameter 38mm

Hi Kipster, it looks genuine to me. Your 8 reales was minted in Mexico City (the mint mark is the M with an O above it. FF refers to the Mint's assayer - the only one for that year. These coins have increased in popularity over the last number of years. For an idea of value, check eBay's sold listings.

Thanks Hando, much appreciated.

I hadn't thought about looking at the sold items on ebay, so grateful to you.

Cheers

Nice coin. These are the "pieces of eight" so beloved of pirate films. Thousands were "liberated" by us English in the 18th century and re-struck into George III crowns by Matthew Boulton. Some of them were not as well struck as others and traces of the original legends may be seen on them. Needless to say, these get a high price at auction.

Thanks Spyro.

He's asked me to sell it for him, but I'd like to keep it for myself as something a bit leftfield. I'll find out how much it's worth and then square up with him.

Kipster, I think an offer in the $125 - $150 range would be generous. You'll see them going for much more on eBay, but those are in really good condition or slabbed examples from the El Cazador shipwreck treasure.

Thanks Hondo.

I'll put that to him and see what he says. There are a couple of other interesting nuggets in his box.

One of which being one of these:

And there's also one of these:

I'll post pics in the appropriate forum when I get them done.

Good morning Kipster. Value will mostly depend on condition and is usually at least half as much again as what a dealer would offer you - they have a living to make, after all. Try looking in magazines like Coin News, or visit a coin fair if there's a local one. But in the end I agree, keeping it is the best option!
