That's rather impressive for a counterfeit piece. It looks almost like a medallic strike (very high relief) or proof/specimen strike.

The die scratch through the bust that leads southwest from the M in OMN is unusual. There are some other oddities such as the incomplete termination of the fold line above the hemline on the reverse when compared to an actual example, the high relief of Sir Bertram's initials on the bust truncation, the very detailed hair and moustache, and the heavy polishing lines in the reverse field adjacent to either side of the trident shaft.

Hi, some context would be useful. Was it sold to you as authentic, or did you buy it as a re-strike?

I agree with Paralyse: for me, the cranial and facial hair was the giveaway. No one, not even The Royal Mint, has ever seen that much hair on this king!

I came across a counterfeit British penny token recently on ebay that had similar attributes...high relief, too much detail, overcooked precision, iffy denticles, etc. When I requested the diameter and weight the seller sent me numbers that were off by 1.5mm and .4g -- upwards. When I reported back to him that it was likely a fake, he basically said that must be why it was so cheap. "Maybe it's a replica?" he asked. So I got back to him with the obvious questions: "Either you're ignorant or you're a crook. Which would you prefer to explain to the ebay cops?" The listing was taken down immediately and I never heard back from the seller, who I reported to the ebay cops anyway, for all the good that does...

So, John K, can you fill us in on provenance and particulars? (Including weight and diameter?)

It's an odd piece all round. Most modern counterfeits from overseas are poorly executed or mediocre at best. Not this one, which is overdone. I'd be rather curious to know its origins.

I have a whole pile of fakes. Most came from China. I keep them for reference. The only one (I hope!) that fooled me was a common Mexico 100 pesos "silver" coin. It was mixed in with a batch of real ones that I bought for silver content. Didn't notice the fake until I tried to sell them - it was not real silver.

On the penny, I agree the king's hair has way too much detail and that at first I thought it might be a proof. One other thing - Britannia's toes are too long! the BIGFOOT penny

Is is scary. And it isn't just britain. Many very well made fakes around, of several european countries. Thank you for the examples.

Anyone knows if the scarce date sovereigns are being counterfeited again, or only the cheaper metals? I have seen recent gold-plated imitation of recent sovereigns. But those are not scare.

In my country I have not yet seen the gold coins copied by scary modern counterfeits. But with early twentieth century copper collecting without being tricked is hard.

Thank you for posting this. It's definitely frightening that the forgeries seem to be getting better.

It looks like another in which they intentionally 'circulate' it, or in this case, it looks like it's been wiped very hard in multiple directions with abrasive polish. It's possible that's from the mould or die or source coin.
