malissadawn Pillar of the Community Canada 1931 Posts	Posted 04/27/2009 7:14 pm I was digging through some old binders to switch my coins over to pocket albums (my newest storage supply and I love them!) and I found a New Brunswick token that says this on the 2x2 half penny token 1A1 BR 910 I have no idea what that means or refers to, which is strange because it is in my own hand writing. Sap Moderator Australia 17002 Posts	Posted 04/27/2009 8:50 pm They're Breton numbers, a reference system derived from an old catalogue, and occasionally quoted by other cataloguers. My old 1977 Charleton quotes BR numbers in the token section. From the Calgary Coin Gallery site: Quote: Breton Tokens are those tokens published in P.N. Breton's book "Popular Illustrated Guide to Canadian Coins, Medals, etc" in 1894, and includes items from both before and after Canadian confederation in 1867. In recent years, the items issues before confederation have come to be known as "Pre-Confederation tokens" and are listed separately. Sap Moderator Australia 17002 Posts	Posted 04/27/2009 11:08 pm As I understand it, they're classifiable as "official coins" because their issue was authorized and backed by the colonial government. The word "token" was included on the coins because the government itself wasn't sure it had the authority to make actual "coins" without offending the Powers That Be back in Britain, so they called them "tokens" just to be safe. Once they formally got permission to issue coins, they issued a second series in 1854, identical in design but with the word "currency" instead of "token". You should find them listed in the 1800's Krause. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S.
