Ok, So I just recently got my 2006 P, and now for the life of me I can't find a 2005 P. Are they even out there?! Will I have to pay a big premium for one of these guys? Any help, or advice would be appreciated.

No they are out there. 30,525,000 of them minted. They are no more in cost than any other MS graded 1 cent.
Now, if you can find a 2006 no P or any other mint mark thats magnetic, then you got yourself an expensive coin.

I've found at least a hundred 2005P in change/rolls, but zero 2006P! According to mintage figures I've heard for the 2006P, there are over 100x as many 2005P minted. So don't sweat it!

How about a 2006 with mint mark nonmagnetic? How come some 2006 with mint mark are magnetic and others are not?

This whole issue can get confusing..I hope someone rings in and puts it all straight. I can say that a P mint mark means the coin is made from plated steel and should be magnetic.

Yes, 1999-2006 with P: copper plated steel (magnetic) 1997-2006 without P: copper/zinc (not magnetic) 2006-2008 RCM mintmark: One can't tell by looking if its magnetic or not. There exist over 100 million of both compositions for 2006. Almost all 2007 are magnetic, but there exist 2007 non-magnetic (my only example is from a PL set). I don't know about 2008, but the mint's annual report is due out soon and we'll find out then. FrostCross: I am pretty sure 2006P had a business strike (albeit limited), as they are apparently showing up in circulation. On the other hand, I am pretty sure 2007 zinc had no business strike. Snaz: How did you find your 2006P - in circulation or by buying it? By the way, I find 2004P a bit less common than 2005P, in defiance of the mintage figures. IF you found yours in circulation, it reinforces my skepticism of the ~200,000 mintage figure for 2006P that I've seen published. It seems way too low. The probability that you found that before a 2005P, given this mintage figure of only 200,000, is very slim. With tens of billions of cents out there, the 2006P would be a needle in a haystack. Mind you, I've recently found two King George V cents (1929, 1932) and no 2006P yet!

Here is the info, I have on all 2006 pennies: There is five documented varieties 1) No P, no mint mark, Non-Magnetic: This is the most common one. About 1 billion in circulation 2) Mint Mark, Non-Magnetic: This is less common. 138 million in circulation 3) Mint Mark, Magnetic: This is less common. Total minted included in 138 million above. 4) P, Magnetic: This one is rare. Only 233,000 in circulation. I find one in every 5000 pennies I search. 5) No P, no mint mark, Magnetic: This is one is the holy grail. I am guessing that only a few hundred or few thousands exist. 2005P seems to be getting harder to find, but I have found nearly 100 to date. They are as common as early 1960's pennies. I have found 13 x 2006P pennies in circulation. They are out there, but require patient and a lot of sorting.

I just checked a handful of cents I had laying around. There were 4 2006: 3 without any mint mark and all 3 non-magnetic; and 1 with the non-P mint mark (mint logo) that is magnetic.

1945V,
This is interesting:
"4) P, Magnetic: This one is rare. Only 233,000 in circulation."
Do you recall the source of the 233,000 mintage number?

Both Haxby/Wiley and Charlton are still not up to date on all the 2006 penny varieties. My source for the 2006P (233,000) number comes from Pierre Charest's 2008 book "Canadian coins & their varieties" http://www.pcfleet.com/book/en/

On the topic of 2006P pennies - it seems they were minted for sets only. However there were some left over after all the sets had been made so they rolled them up and put them into the regular coin distribution system. I got lucky in that I was at a grocery store and the cashier had to open a new roll of pennies to make my change. I looked and it was a 2006P. I asked the cashier if I could buy all the new pennies and she said sure. She had two other rolls of the same 1006P and I cleaned her out. I have 2 rolls of 2006P pennies in RCM printed paper rolls and 50 loose 2006P pennies. I have all 4 varieties but still searching for the elusive 2006 no mint mark, no P and is magnetic.

I just checked a PL set (the wedding one) I have and it is the 2006 P magnetic. Were all the PL set 2006 P magnetic?
