What would you grade this 1880 Indian Head cent?

By Rick Snow's grading guide, I'd say VF30-35, depending on how it looks in hand.
Perhaps that's an unreasonable grade, but here's how he defines VF from XF:

Quote:
A VF coin will have a full headband (or ribbon) by
LIBERTY, but the ribbon end with the diamond detail will
be connected to the lower hair curl.
A basic XF coin will haver the lower hair curl clearly
separated from the ribbon end.

Your coin looks like one where the second 8 used a broken punch.
If you can provide a sharper date, I'll try to give you a Snow #

Shame about the small amount of wear. The coloring is great. Nice coin!

Cool...thanks for the new pic!
Based on what I see, this looks like a broken digit variety.
However, the date position doesn't match anything in Snow's guide.
It could be a new one, and Rick Snow could take a look and confirm (for a small fee).
If it's new, you'll get credit as a discovery piece.

DVC are you talking about the IHC Attribution Guides? Do you have those? I was thinking about getting them.

Yep--I checked Snow's attribution guide for this date.
They are a great reference if you collect IHCs.

I feel it would be a vf-30 due to the wear pattern on the cheek
