I have the opportunity to buy quite a bit of pre-Euro European coins quite cheap. Can these still be converted? For example, I can get French bi-metallic 10 Franc coins for 20c each. If my math is correct, the "fixed" exchange of the Franc is 6.55 Francs = 1 Euro and 1 Euro is worth about $1.40. Therefore, 10 Francs should be worth 1.53 Euro, and 1.53 Euro should be worth about $2.14. I can also get quite a few other larger denomination coins from other Euro countries such as Portugal, Spain, and Italy.

Germany is the only country that will still exchange its old currency for Euros.. As far as I know....

Nope, the only exchangable coins left are from Germany, Spain, ... Ireland... erm... and I think that's it. http://www.ecb.int/euro/exchange/ht...ndex.en.htmlAbout French coins, they certainly look cool, and the 1Fr can be (illegally!) used as a quarter in Canada. Even though the 10Fr and the 1EUR are the same size, the 10Fr is more magnetic. Don't buy it! I still have 400 some odd Fr in coins... |

That is a great link, thanks. I sort of assumed that it was too good to be true. However, might these "high value" coins still be worth 20c each in bulk? The mintages are quite high, but due to the Euro conversion, the surviving mintages are bound to be much much smaller. Same logic I have for the later date U.S. silver coins, very high mintages, thus very low prices, but ultimately the surviving numbers are very small because of melting. Someday when people realize just how small, prices might skyrocket!

Well, these were minted in really high amounts (like the 64 quarters) but they're all base metal coins. Also, there's quite a lot of French coins since tourists bring a lot of coins back here. If you're looking for one I can send you one.

Wow you learn something every day! I have several pounds of each country. I have someone from Italy trying to buy all 21 lbs of Italian coins. No wonder.
So France is just a big pile in the closet for awhile.

I don't know from experience, but I would guess that coin dealers from the Euro nations must have stocked up when they knew that the Euro conversion was coming. There may well be price appreciation, but I would not expect them to skyrocket.

Well, not really. I read that during the last day of the Fr coins exchange, there was a line of about 200 people with massive bags (including someone who won a lottery full of coins) trying to exchange them. Basically long story short the bank couldn't handle that many people so for all the people in line, the bank gave them a certificate to allow them to exchange a few days after the deadline. Quote:

Guess that any coin which says "Türkiye" instead of "Italia" is from Turkey and not Italy.  Also note that these old Turkish Lira coins were taken out of circulation at the end of 2005. Whether they can still be redeemed I don't know; with old notes I would say yes, but the old coins ... Christian |
