I want to put my proof coins into the Dansco albums. Can anyone give me ideas on the best way to open a proof set, besides carefully?  Thanks. |

wetglaswegian, do you buy individual proof coins for Dansco albums?
It's a lot cheaper to buy the set then open it up.

 bill069 what I do is run my finger nail across the the 4 corners until I can get it to pop open a little then I just run my nail across the whole thing until it pops off. then I use gloves over a soft surface to try to rotate the coin out it is pretty easy. but that is for the 1999-2009 sets. I have no clue how to open for instance if I wanted to my 1981 set that is just a hunk of hard plastic I never tried that. |

Hi Bill , I dont put my proofs in an album at all ,if its ungraded or not encapsulated I put it in an airtite.
I love my dansco books but AU / UNC and under goes in those.

I have cracked all of my proof sets and put them in my Dansco albums. The OGP packaging is no more air tight than a Dansco album; they are not hermetically sealed like TGP slabs are.
With exception of the earliest ones, they all opened very easily. The stubborn ones needed a little persuasion in the form of a utility knife down the seam. Be very careful doing this!

I've been breaking out those proof coins for a long, long time. I take the case and place it in a vice. Then a saber saw with a wood cutting blade and cut all the sides off. Actually usually only three sides and then it just pops open. I do the same thing with any slabbed coins I purchase. Don't use a find toothed blade since it will usually create enough heat to remelt the plastic back together. If you can move fast enough and have a Dremel, you could use their cut off wheels to do the same thing but again, due to the speed, the plastic could melt back together. I usually order many of those sets for just that reason and also to give for Christmas Presents.
