I have been collecting coins for years, mostly Australian and British coins. I know what I am talking about when it comes to coin collecting from these countries so you can imagine my shock, horror when I took some coins for sale into Adelaide Exchange Coins and Jewellers. One coin which I took in (the Australian holy grail) is a 2012 Red Poppy coloured $2 in UNC condition, worth around A$350. The other coin was a 2013 QEII purple coronation 'C' Mintmark $2 coloured coin worth around A$550. The ladie in this shop said to me that they are only worth face value A$2 each. I was shocked that this person is even working in a coin shop as she had NO idea what she was doing and certainly had NO idea as to what coins were worth.

There is a more sinister possibility - that she knew exactly what you had and hoped that you didn't.

I just checked out their website and found this (2013-C) in previous sold items.
Doesn't show the price they sold it for, but the recommended retail price is $800.

Thanks everyone for all your thoughts! I contacted the Manager at Adelaide Exchange Coins & Jewellers and he was horrified! He requested that I give them a second chance and was going to speak with this staff member. Thing is I am not desperate to sell, I just called in to their Adelaide store as I was in the city. I just said thanks but NO thanks. Their loss not mine. I just wanted to make others aware of Adelaide Exchange Coins & Jewellers of incompetent staff members.

I have no connection to the store or advocating staff's behaviour. Perhaps staff was instructed to "buy low, sell high" - but that might have been taken a bit too much.

A good store should at least start conversation by taking Rennik's catalog as a topic starter.
