American Numismatic Society - The early history of the gold florin of Florence, introduced in 1252, has traditionally been subsumed within the wider historical narrative of the resumption of gold coinage in western Europe and thus somewhat neglected. By bringing human agents and political institutions more prominently into the history of the coin, Stefano Locatelli (Marie Sk#322;odowska-Curie Fellow, University of Milan) offers a significant revision of the existing consensus around the so-called "dollar" of the Middle Ages, arguing that it was not exclusively grand commerce that enabled its success, but rather its simultaneous adoption and diffusion into networks of power linking Florence and its merchants with the Angevin Crown in the Kingdom of Sicily and the papacy.
