Can anyone provide some guidance on French Essai coinage and what the catalog MAZ means. I find these very interesting.

Cannot really help you with the French essai pieces, but "MAZ." refers to the Mazard catalog: Jean Mazard, Histoire monetaire et numismatique contemporaine. Two volumes, published in the late 1960s.
