Hello, everyone. I came across this forum and it seemed like you guys know your stuff. I have here a coin that is in my possession that I know nothing about. I've had it for so long, I forgot where I got it from. It may not even be a real coin, just some novelty item. Does anyone have any information on this? I can try to get clearer pics of it if somebody needs them. In my hand, it weighs a bit more than a quarter; I don't have a scale so I can't give an exact number. Edit: Also, the edges are completely smooth; no barring or anything special. However, as you can see, the coin is not perfectly circular, in fact it is a bit uneven on the edges (but still smooth). It looks like there are some Kanji on the side with the Cross, leading me to believe it may be of Asian origin. Does anyone have information? Edited by Sap 06/18/2009 06:40 am

Most likely a novelty item as you suspect. Its Spanish and typical of the pirate booty souvineers.I had one very similar , good copies. Best to post exact weight when possible.

Is there any sort of test I can do short of finding the exact weight?

I think it was echzinto (sorry if I spelled it wrong!) or someone who said that very few of these old coins were perfectly round...

Thats true wd1040 , the one I have is a particularly decieving copy , pretty well done. Firestarsolo , look at the edges , is there a faint hairline running around the rim ?

It doesn't appear that way. There are some scratches parallel with the edge of the coin but nothing that stretches from end-to-end that might signify two halves. I'll go grab a microscope. What else can I look for?

I mean magnifying glass. There is definitely some pitting around the edges, but it doesn't appear that there is a distinct line running throughout. It may be in some places, but it's really hard to tell because nothing is really continuous. Should I try to take some pics and post 'em?

Wont hurt , no casting marks is a good sign.

For what it's worth, I made a "fake" scale using a ruler laying on its side (perfectly balanced such that no weight=horizontal ruler), my magnifying glass (for the round edge to hold the ruler), and some spare coins. Assuming the weight of one half dollar is 11.34g (which is what I found online), it looks like the half dollar weighs more than the coin. Meaning my coin is a fake. Dang! Still, a neat-looking coin. Myth busted!

lol you're giving me false hope! Using 4 pennies (2.5g) it weighs somewhere around 7.5-10g.

You should be able to identify the coin better then we can from the pics , only exact weights are any use , 1 or 2 grams out wont do. There is no easy test.Better pics would help for sure.

Dont be surprised to hear we see that "coin" a lot on this ID forum , even I had one. There has always been a big market for pirate souvineers.I think mine is even gold plated , we never did establish what was under the goldplate.

want me to saw mine in half? :)
also, no problem - it was fun to go on the search for it. Perhaps I'll post some other coins I have on this forum, it's actually quite enjoyable to track down these kinds of things
