A while back someone put up a post asking if people collect a particular year. Someone replied something like 1960 and said it was their birth year. This person also said that there were X different circulating coins made that year. This got me thinking, I'd like to pursue my birth year. I isolated all those coins in my collection from my birth year (1970) and found I had 499. I then removed duplicates and was left with 255, which includes a few banknotes and a few proof things. Is there anywhere where world coins are listed by year? I'd love to know what was minted in 1970. In the past I've loved a challenge like this, search the catalogs and find ALL the information. However, I'm getting lazy and spoiled in the age of Google (and busy as a husband, father, etc.), everything seems to be out there somewhere. Anyone know if this is out there somewhere? If I am not wrong, the 1970 Soviet mint set will be extremely pricy as the 1970 5 kopek is a key date - that coin alone supposedly costs over 100USD. I don't remember seeing any 1970 Soviet mint sets any cheaper than 600USD unfortunately. Word.

NumisMaster can work as a date filter. If you go to NumisMaster, click on "find my coin", select "world" as the source, then type "1970" in the date, and you should get a (very long) list of all the coins issued in that year.

Thanks Sap, that is a great way to find what I was looking for. Much better than a long manual search through Krause.

That makes me remember something (totally unreleated but interesting). As a small boy in the late 1970's I wrote to lots of countrys mints trying to get a sample of their coins or at least details of how I could buy them -- This was way before the internet or Paypal so buying things from another country (and especially a non EU country) was challenging to say the least. Only TWO countrys responded. Venezuela sent a nice letter telling me how I could purchase a set with something bizzare called an "International Money Order" which I had never heard of at the time, and the USSR, as it was then, actually sent me a set of their coins including a mint medal. Of course lots of my letters probably never got to their intended targets as my list of mint contacts was probably inaccurate, but I thought it an interesting result.

I used Numismaster as my guide, adding in 1970 as my search term. Then I considered those countries that use different dating systems (i.e. Iran, Thailand, etc) and added them in. I tried to isolate only those coins that were "intended for circulation". I came up with a list of 552 different coins made in 1970. I thought my collection was pretty darn big, but I only have 202 of these coins. Of course I never really actively pursued this date before. After spending considerable time with Numismaster and my Krause, I think that 1970 was a pretty spectacular year. So many countries were changing coins at the time that there were multiple issues. This also seems to be the last year that many countries had silver in circulating coins. Well, I've set myself a challenge! Wish me luck.

Jays-Dad, If you'd like a set of circulated Aussie 1970 coins, let me know. The year I'm collecting is 1943, so if you have any spare 1943 coins to trade, that'd be great.
Even if you don't have any 1943, I can send you 6 Aussie coins all dated 1970. PM me your address if you want them.

Thanks nancyc, however, of the 202 different 1970 coins I do have, 6 of them are 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, and 50c from Australia. I definitely have some extra 1943 coins, but without knowing which ones you need, it's hard to let you know what I have.

I'll make a list of any US 1970 1943 & World coins for 1943 I have, and also see how many 1970 from other countries I can find and get back to you. it might take me a little while though! Still quite a while from getting around to doing this. It won't happen overnight, but it will happen!
