I picked up some foreign coins at a closeout sale last summer. First year proof set Rhodesia(red velvet box), flipped 1950's South Africa BU coins, USSR 1967 PL set in RCM type "pliofilm" (found info easily enough on these) and this 1961 USSR set... but the coins are 1957.

My Russian is atrocious... can someone give me some info on the rather bizarre description on the set? I have no reference materials for such coins.

I think in 1961 The Soviets rebased their rubles or something with a new gold weight... they introduced a new series of banknotes, too.

**ahhh... and Wikipedia confirms me!

Yes, that is correct, about 1961 the Ruble was revalued to a tenth of what it had been previously. For example, pre-1961, it cost 40 Kopeck to mail a letter in Russia; after the revaluation it only cost 4 Kopeck. Bascially, what they did was lop off a 0.

The coinage was redesigned, and the old design coin was withdrawn as a result. This is what you have.

... ahh!, I was looking for 1961 and 1957 Kopeck and other spellings of Kopeck. Rouble and other spellings of Rouble would have been a better search. To think I should have known that but I was just looking at the writing on the cardboard and didn't think Rouble... and I really didn't search that hard and just put them away. But I've been straightening stuff up to make more efficient use of my rented storage(moved/closed bank that's now a business, that also rents out the safe deposit boxes and heated basement storage lockers).

I take it the cyrillic(sp?) is what the English says and...

Thanks both of you... I can find my way now.

Yeah, the English text means the same as the Cyrillic.

What this means is that the coins of 1921-1957 series are no longer in circulation and are officially withdrawn in 1961. Today this type of "mint set" is pretty scarce and I have seen it going over 200USD or so. However please don't quote me on that price as I have not seen any examples on ebay for a while.

Okay... I remember trying to search them out a week or so after I bought them. I couldn't find much in English but sorta weeded out a value from one site in Euros and converted it... it was over a hundred but I don't remember exactly.

Anyway. If they were "discontinued", were the coins supposed to be destroyed/recycled?... were the coins held by the mint or some other official then placed in these holders... and why would the governing body release a set well after it should have been re-called and seemingly worthless?... or were the holders made and collectors filled them?

I don't have the set rite handy but they were in the same condition I would have expected any PL Mint set to be... you know BUnc condition.

Thanks all for the info you've provided. It was more than I ever came up with.
