This medal is another one that could have gone to melt with the high silver prices. Do not know if it should have been spared.

Basel,-Medal-Reproduction-Of-The-City-View-2-Taler

Ir was a recreation of a famous coin from Basel, Switzerland, the 2 Taler with an obverse showing the city. The medal was created in 1958 (says so on the reverse) by a swiss company called Huguenin.

I would really like to know, but have not find out, if this was struck continuously in high numbers. Or was a one off. The medal is pretty but the world is full of pretty modern medals. Imitations medals of old coins are not especially attractive to me. Genuine restrikes with the original dies would be but it is not the case.

As to the mintage, consider reaching out to the private Swiss mint to see if they have kept those records.

According to numista they went bankrupt in 2022. This as an accidental buy for me. As well as the other I showed today. I wanted other medals sold together, and intended to dispose of the rest. Of these. But they are simply too nice to dispose of knowing that as things are now their fate would be melting.

The coin this reproduces, that I would very much like to get in my collection. Amazing work.

But looking at the piece, I think I will settle for the reproduction.
