Although "$" is often called the "dollar sign" it is used for many other currencies. Post your coins that have "$" on them but the denomination is not in dollars.
The $ sign is said (by some) to originate from the scrolls around the pillars that were a feature of some designs of the Spanish and Spanish Colonial 8-Real coins that circulated as dollars. Here's an 1813 Spanish half-real showing the 'dollar' sign!
