I've been surfing ebay looking at the coins and came across something I liked. The price seemed a little low for 3 Roman coins.

I checked out the sellers other coins and I noticed that many, if not all of his coins were of "rainbow" color.

My gut said to not buy the coins, so I backed out of the sale. Did I do the right thing?

Well for one thing, nobody can know if you don't post pictures of the coins or at least a link to the ebay auction.

Unfortunately, I'm seeing what appears to be 'manufactured' toning...

I see a lot of artificially toned coins. Good call to stay away.

I'm glad I did the right thing.

I wonder how he toned those coins, if he toned them. If he did not tone them, then where did he get them? I wonder.

The coins I was looking at were the 3-Roman coins, at $14.95 for the three.

yep, even the listing of the 'toned' coins has a rainbow on it - that alone tells me that the coins are artificially toned

I believe your intuition is correct. I saw quite a few artificial coins he has listed, starting with that 1967 Panama.
