Looking for some advice. I've recently rifled through and sorted by date, mint and proof sets left by my father. Aside from the silver sets, I really don't have an interest in the others and am considering moving those sets on down the road. I have roughly 400 sets, lol!

What I would appreciate advice on is:
I'm not an error checker but are there years that I should most certianly take a look at for valuable errors?
if I wanted to sell the whole lot and not mess around with ebay/market place; what is the best source to determine fair pricing for me as a seller and the buyer? A LCS basically offered ~$4/set.

Thanks

I'm sure you realize your LCS gave you a seriously lowball bid at $4 per set. There are sets in that date range that would wholesale in the $4 range, but most are higher. And some are substantially higher. No doubt they'd love to buy the whole lot for $1,600. I would TOO!
Are they in Original Mint Packaging, and complete? Most US Mint Sets will have both P & D Mints, and they often sell for more than their Proof Set counterparts. In both cases, collectors want the packaging to be in nice condition.

Getting more like what they're worth is likely going to cost you some time in research. You'll see there are some that legitimately won't bring you $10, and others that are triple that, and more.

Offhand, you could check for varieties like small date 1960 and 1970-S. Sets with these and other popular varieties have a higher value.

You could post a list with the quantity of sets for each date/type for a guesstimate of the collection's value. If you want to put in the effort, you can check for SOLD prices for each on ebay (tick that "Sold Items" box). Asking prices are meaningless.

I'll post a couple of lists, but you'll see the values vary widely between them.

Someone with better advice will offer it. Meanwhile, here's a bump.

Vector Ze,
Thanks for the response. Yes, all sets are in the orginal packaging, with a few still in orginial blue mailing box, unopened.

I'd like to do is maximize the lot even if it tooks some learning time and time to move along.

Thanks also for the links.

Victor Ze gave you good advice if you are willing to take the time and do the research to sell these ~400 sets individually.

That seems however to contradict your original statement:

If you are really looking to minimize your effort then you are going to have to accept a lower per set price.

The most likely buying source is from a dealer who needs to pay a lower price since these sets don't move quickly and that dealer is tying up cash that is going to sit in his inventory.

Here is a suggestion:

Using the Greysheet (retail) price guide linked above inventory your sets into retail price ranges.

For example:

$4 - $10 x number of sets by date
$10-$20 x number of sets by date
$20- $40 x number of sets by date

Bring that inventory sheet to a large regional coin show and ask dealers to make you an offer on any or all of the ranges.

IMO you should expect reasonable offers in the ~50% of retail price.

Thanks for the replies.
Will be running through the links and grouping as mentioned, at least that is my plan for now.

I was initially thinking to get this done quickly but realized during my inital look through and sorting, it was quiet interesting and have slowed down a bit. Initially it was overwhelming with number of sets, but as the old man would say, "shiney coins are just nice to look at".

Thanks again.

Just an afterthought: but in sorting through them, you could actually become a Mint Set collector, retaining the best. And IMO, that isn't a fate worse than death. :^)

EDIT: OMG, I just realized I've unknowingly been logged in as an earlier member whose account I thought I'd lost access to. I'm now Vector Ze. Weird.

For starters, 1965-1970 will have a 40% silver Kennedy half dollar in the set. Some sets might also have a 40% silver Eisenhower dollar. Definitely worth more than $4 just in silver value.

Straight off the top, you want to look closely at the 1975-1976 bicentennial sets. The 1976-D quarter doubled die is worth thousands in mint state. The 1976-S clad Kennedy half dollar proof with doubled die reverse is also worth several hundred dollars.
