Hi.Everybody, I just purchased a 1923 S Lincoln Penny on ebay and received it today. Would you take a look at it and give it what you think is a proper grade. I think it is probably VF 30. Thx.

Is the reverse color that different? The obverse looks great but the reverse is suspect.

1923S is generally a weak issue, this one has nice wheat lines and cheek/jaw separation still. The left wheat grains are very strong still and can be the "guiding light" for the 20's branch mint issues due to all the issues. Surprisingly, the reverse die state is decent. The right wheat is typically weaker on these due to non-parallel dies. Overused dies were common too.

when posting asking for a grade hold you comments on the grade itself until at least 48hrs then compare what you think to those. you dont want to put anything in folks head before they assess it

i think VF30 is correct.

Hi, Thanks for all the great comments.
JBuck, thx for consolidating. Will try not to do that again.
Panzaldi, I will refrain from posting my opinion per your suggestion.
BadThad - Your in-depth appraisal is really great. I bought this penny for $15 and thought it was a good price. I needed it to fill a hole in my Dansco album. Your comment tells me that I'm on the right track in this very difficult and rewarding hobby.

Thanks again for everyone's comments.

I've got all the 20s except for the 1922 plain. It'll be a while before I can get that one. My wife's uncle collected most of these from pocket change starting ? ? ? He was even able to get two 1909 plain and two 1909 VDB's that way. I didn't know him well, but I don't think he was the type to purchase coins from a dealer.
