Hello CCF friends, it's been a while. Still pursuing the circulated commemorative type set, though I haven't found a coin I wanted in months. Until now...

Spotted this Old Spanish Trail half on ebay, which certainly appears to have a significant amount (for this coin) of honest circulation wear. Now, this same coin sold on 6/2 and must have been returned, and I've asked the seller if there was a reason for this. However, it certainly looks problem free to me... do you all have any thoughts on the surfaces, authenticity (looks right to me), and maybe grade?

Odds are I won't be able to afford it anyway, but I'm keen to learn more about it anyway so I know what to look for in the future.

Of course, Nickelsearcher designated this one as a "stopper" for the set back in 2014, a status which I doubt has changed. Maybe I'll try a bid if I can swing it!

Hello Silver Searcher,

That's one circulated Commemorative,

I look forward to see what Nickelsearcher has to say,

To me the details on the coin look very much like a pocket piece, The perimeter lettering looks Crisp, Moderate wear on design Highpoints on Obv and Rev, Obviously cleaned, I do not see any jump out at us problems, Maybe not enough wear?

Thanks for sharing

That's quite a find! This coin is extremely rare in honestly circulated state and in my judgement remains a 'stopper' for a circulated classic silver commemorative type set.

I had this to say about the circulated Spanish Trail in commems epic 'Days of' thread:

#3: 1935 Old Spanish Trail Half Dollar

Now we are coming into the really tough examples. The following three coins truly are the rarest of the 'stoppers' ... and could very well never be found by a dedicated collector.

The are a total of three certified Spanish Trail at XF45 or lower ... two PCGS and one NGC. The lowball is an amazing PCGS VF30 example.

1935 Spanish Trail - PCGS XF45

Circulated-Spanish-Trail-Half-Dollar-!---Thoughts?

Based on your photo I judge it to be authentic with original surfaces. Compare to my PCGS XF45 example (above) and it has a bit more high point wear. I say it grades VF35/XF40.

If you really want a 50-coin circulated type set you might never find this one again. Don't want to be Debbie Downer - but you knew that when you started this pursuit.

Let us know what you decide to do. I'd be curious about the sell price for this coin. I paid $1,050 for mine in June 2012.

Now that the nickelsearcher stamp of approval has been given...

I hope it finds a home in your collection!

I would be more inclined to say shill bidder more so than it was returned.

An update! This coin sold for $860 on ebay today. Unfortunately, that was just over what I could spend (my bid of $840 kicked it to that price).

The hunt continues! It's important to know one's limits, I think. Someone got a great coin at a good price.

I'm also in my 20s, so I have ages to keep looking!

I say that $860 was a fair price for a very tough coin. As stated above, I paid $1,050 for mine 14 years ago.

Best of wishes with your continued quest @Silver Searcher. I wish you the best in this challenging pursuit.
