Poll Question
where did the majority of your collection come from? I was 10 when I started collecting and focused on collecting any forign coin that I could get! so alot of my collection was given to me and I have found quite a bit in circulation, now I try and focus on certain countrys I have quite a few old coins from france! any way the reason what made me ask, I found a little antique shop the other day because my gran wants to sell her furniture and anyway I was looking at all the stuff and keeping an eye out for coins and I had a real suprise because I didnt notice it at first! at the counter I came across a whole hoard of world coins!!! some I recognised because they were part of my collection and some were old aswell and this man he seemed to be sorting them out not quite sure if he was going to buy or what, anyway when I got out the shop I told my gran because she didnt notice lol! and she asked me weather I wanted some for my birthday so now hopefully I'm going to get a suprise, on wednesday! and even if she doesn't get me any, I can go in there anytime because its right near my college Results

Yes like scoutjim, I have received coins from all of the abovementioned.
I have answered "from a dealer" because that would be where I get most of them even though some are on the internet.

all except post office and metal detecting. Here the post offices have nothing to do with collectable coins.

friends and relatives ! When they go abroad, they can take back some for me. Now I also go to cultural market ( in China cultural market is like antique market or flea market, there are antiques, stamps, coins, etc)

I gave this information before but, it seems this is a more appropriate location. I have been collecting coins since my family was in the restaurant business in the '60's and '70's. My parents owned restaurants back into the '50's and that's where my Mom began to scarf every wheat and Indian penny that she could find to add to her collection of about 20 years or so. She also took all of the silver coins she could find also. I have now inherited that collection from Mom and have joined my collection and hers together. While in the restaurant business in the '50's a little boy came in and asked what he could get "for these". He plopped down 20 cents. Part of my folks business was an ice cream shop as well as the diner. Dad told him that he could have an ice cream cone (25 cents). Those coins turned out to all be Indian Head cents - mostly 1880's, 1890's and all of the 1900's except the S. I'm keeping them in my growing collection. I also buy from dealers and other collectors. I have a metal detector but haven't been too successful (yet)! Thanks for letting me share.

most of the things you written down is also same to me most parents and grandparents store coins there are new or old I think some of them have that kind of a hobby storing something in value, time past and they will be out in circulation even though they return most of the coin on the time alloted by the goverment some still survive, it is wise to ask something or someone friends or relatives if they have coins they dont need it will be in the dark and end in a dump in a skip
