Probably gas bubbles escaping from the zinc. Sort of a numismatic flatulence.

I saw that too Yotie but it looks more like a D shaped gas bubble if you magnify the image. As if it had to raise that way because of the rounded part of the D.

The D just has gas... I mean gas bubble.. lol Yeah it's the zinc I think because it's white in the bubbles. Looks like bad warts...

it did not make the cull for my collection

It's just corrosion, this is what happens when the zinc oxidizes.
