Definition: Finished with Coin Set
The term used by coin collectors to identify a coin collection that has all the slots covered in their Whitman / Dansco Binder. Normally hollered at the top of our lungs the minute the last coin goes in, "I'm FINISHED"
Followed by months of culling and replacing of "inferior" coins. (NOTE: These were the same coins you were so proud of last month) Followed by a year or more of getting the "BEST" coins Certified. (You tell wife I am "Almost Finished now just need to get a few of these Certified"(Wife Smiles) (NOTE: Coins finally come back, Beautiful MS 63-65 and PR 67-69 "I am so proud" This is then followed by more "years" of upgrading the Certified coins to higher grades, but the good news is YOUR ALMOST FINISHED (NOTE: Wife has long since taken you dog and gone to live with mother,,,hmmmm more money for upgrades.) Sent more coins to be graded and certified, can't wait till they get back. (NOTE: I really miss the dog) Coins are back all MS 67-69 and every proof is a 70,,YIPEE Finally Finished NOTE: (Wife filed for divorce and has ask for custody of Coin Set!! and I got no money for a lawyer!!)
DEFINITION: Finished with coin set ---- Ain't no such animal!

I think to be finished, you have to set a goal before and meet it. Then you can always start "new sets"! I am making those "new sets" all the time.

Great analysis! I have been reluctant to play the upgrade game. There are coins in my collection that I have had for over thirty years now and I am very sentimentally attached to them. So I can say, with great confidence, that I am finished with at least six sets!

Wife gone...does that mean she gets the exasperated look photo album too. My wife is great about my collections...the never ending perpetual collections. Right now, the Whitman style books I have are reasonably filled. As they are for the kids to see I most likely won't upgrade them much. (unless the right deal comes along) If I get dansco albums, then the upgrading for the album will commence. I think that MS and PF graded State Quarters will be a focus. It will end when they bury me and the kids auction off all my crap

MrWisker, my wife is super too, she has started collecting stamps and helps me with the coins as well. Like your collection, mine is destined for my daughter, hopefully she will appreciate them and pass them on to her children. I really enjoyed writing the little story above but I think some have thought I was serious and of course I WASN'T. I was just trying to show how even a simple thing like a small collection can take on a life all its own. Hope you enjoyed it and hopefully everyone else will in the context in which it was written.
Thanks for input,
Mike

Funny ..... and true as well I suppose. I have zero (0) 'completed sets' .... but am diligent in upgrading my growing collection of Jefferson nickels ..... so I can relate. Thanks for the insightful post Best David

I just 'finished' a Jefferson set, and I've already ordered some upgrades... There is no finished, I think.

If you have collected for more than a week, you will notice that a 'finished' set turns into an 'expanded' set. I started collecting my Lincolns a little over three years ago and have them almost to the stage I want them. But like others, I could not get rid of the others and they started to expand into other folders and sets. So right now, my expanded set is in at least 12 different books, many different grades, many different tubes and many different memories. I guess the way I know that a coin does not go into my expanded set is when I can finally pass it on to one of my kids and their expanded sets.

I enjoyed your analysis. I only completed the franklin set. Everything else is unfinished and sidelined at the moment since I'm trying to keep up with my daughter who's turning 1 next month.
