I have taken up coin roll hunting (cents only so far) in the last year. So far I have just been buying boxes from banks but I've been trying to think of other sources.

I thought estate sales might be a possible source. I contacted Coinstar to see if I could buy directly from them (thinking of folks turning in their saved penny jars) but they won't deal directly with the public.

I thought I might poll the forum for ideas...

Just brainstorming but you might find out if you can buy from an armored truck company. Besides collecting money from there accounts they also provide their accounts with change.

Good idea! One of the things I like todo is track the box types I get from various banks. Some are clearly labeled 'brinks', etc and I also track the years they produce much like the "cent project" (which I had a great interest in, too bad it fizzled). I can use these results to identify the banks/suppliers to one with the most potential (oldest average coins).

An idea I saw that I'm going to try as well was to get coins from small town banks, the idea was that coins were more likely to be recirculated longer in a small area.

That is what I do especially for halves. I have had good success with this approach. Although it seems that good finds are starting to dwindle some indicating that most coin jars have been dumped already. I have a route planed out for Fridays that takes me to 12 banks that I have had good to moderate success in getting rolls that have potential.

Its good to know the small bank approach has potential.

I like the grocery idea. An assumption of mine is that the current economy would motivate folks to turn in their old money jars they have lying around which will introduce some old coins into circulation.

You may want to ask small vending machine companies.

I stop in at a local "7-11" every day during the workweek. This particular store has it's very own little coin-vault. When the clerk starts to get low on coins in the cash drawer, he/she punches a button on the coin-vault...and receives a new roll of whatever denomination he/she needs.

I've had some pretty decent luck getting single rolls from them. Especially with cents. I walked in there today and paid 50 cents for a really nice 1966 Kennedy 1/2.

I rarely buy boxes, I get customer rolls from the banks I deal with, the vault tellers love it, saves them from having to send off rolls as frequently. Using this approach at three different banks I have managed to convince the tellers to save all the silver that comes through (not alot) for me. I have filled my Dansco Franklin half dollar set with the exception of the 51D (several in BU) using this method. Two of the banks even call me when they get rolls in marked wheats or large silver dollar rolls. I think I have a better shot at finding the keys this way. I never return coin to these banks, I have a different special bank with mean tellers for that.
