Hello everyone,

My grandfather recently passed away and my father inherited his gold coins. All the coins have their respective invoices showing the dates bought, prices paid and are in cases which have never been opened. I'm trying to help my father figure out the value of the coins and if he decides to do so, the best way to sell them.

This is my first time dealing with gold coins and I'm a bit confused. For example, I'm looking at one invoice for an order of American Eagles in April of 2005. The invoice is from the United States Rare Coin & Bullion Reserve. One of the coins is a 1990 $50 American Eagle. The price paid for this particular coin is $1617.00.

From what I've read it looks like the average price of gold in 2005 was around $444. I know gold is over $1000/ounce today. However, when I look online at various sites ( ebay for one) I see people selling this particular coin for $1200. If the price of gold has doubled since this coin was bought it stands to reason the coin would be worth more than the price paid unless my grandfather grossly overpaid. Am I way off here?

Please educate me or point me in the right direction! Any help is appreciated.

Frazzle,

I appreciate the quick response and the link you provided.

I was afraid that's what had happened.

As far as selling these coins, what would you recommend? Should I go talk to local coin dealers? ebay? Coin sites?

Thanks again for your help.

Checking recent completed listings on ebay shows that a couple have sold recently
for a little over $1600. This is for the proof quality (shiny in original velvet clam shell case). So at least not going negative
on the deal.

Phoyce...check the completed auctions on ebay for what similar coins to yours have sold for....That will give you an idea of what theyre truly worth!

Then you can try to either sell them on ebay or talk to your local dealer, just be aware that ebay fees are high and dealers wont pay full price...GOOD LUCK

I agree, if going with e-bay. Watch several auctions and check their sales prices. You also have to determine if it is a proof coin. While you may want to visit a dealer for his opinion, you will most likely get low-balled. Also coin sites like this, or more specific bullion sites may be the way to go too.

Check out APMEX, which has a 1990 proof gold eagle, for sale, graded to top grade - 70 for $1695.

if it is a proof coin - DO NOT TOUCH THE COIN.
