What kind of jobs are available in this field. How do salaries go for someone with such a degree?

If you can prove it exists, I'll start working on a Statement of Purpose and dissertation proposal.

Why WOULDN'T it exist? I can name at least three friends with much more screwy sounding degree's. I myself almost fell into a Masters in "Hospitality" of all things.

Of course you can get a PhD in numismatics. It's not easy, but you can get one. Dr. Don Kagin was (apparently) the first person to be awarded one by an American institution, and he is or has served on the advisory boards of several organizatons such as PCGS and Odyssey Marine Exploration.

PhDs in Numismatics are a long-standing feature of classics and ancient history departments, particularly in Europe. Dr. Ilya Prokopov, who assists FORVM with compiling their database of fake ancient coins, obtained his doctorate in numismatics from Sofia University, Bulgaria.

Here in Australia, the only place to do higher study of numismatics is at the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies at Macquiarie University, Sydney, where numismatics degrees can be obtained at the Masters level.

I would respect a PhD in History that has a specialization in Numismatics. That would be cool. As for a PhD in Numismatics, I agree with Figman.

If you really look into it there are places that will give you a batchers, masters and even a doctor degree in almost anything. I'm sure if there is a degree in basket weaving, there must be one in Numismatics. A neighbor of mine had two of his kids go all the way through college free by applying for grants in subjects that most people didn't know existed. Of course after graduation, they now had college degrees and could apply for any job and say I've got a degree. Most organizations really don't check. The problem is even if you do get a doctorate in Numismatics, so what? So now you have that degree and no job. Imagine going into a coin store and saying I've got a doctorate in coins. Will you hire me? Then you wonder why they say don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Imagine applying for a open position at the Smithsonian and saying you've got a doctorate in coins. Imagine meeting with a archaeologist working in the Mediterranean and saying you've got a doctorate in coins. Imagine talking to a publisher who is looking for material and mentioning that you have a recently completed doctoral thesis - about coins.

Becoming an expert on any subject will open doors for you. If Numismatics is your passion, then pursue it. The job opportunities will follow.

My passion is Archaeology. Friends and relatives alike told me not to pursue archaeology as a career because the job prospects were so terrible. I ignored the advice. Now I spend my days working as an archaeologist for the government. Tomorrow I leave the office for the field again, and my hands will be full of cameras, maps, and equipment. No disrespect intended, just_carl, but the door just might hit me on the way out.
