since this is the links AND information section I thought id post this here

what to do... ...when your camera does not have a macro lens, but you want to take some coin pics.

first, get yourself a spare loupe. this should be the kind where there is a small plastic skirt around the edge, like the Agfa brand loupes. if you put one of these loupes over your coin, it will focus on the coin when your eye is almos touching the loupe. put the loupe over the coin, then, put the lens of the camera over the eye end of the loupe, with the lens touching the lens of the loupe. hold your camera perfectly still, then press the focus button. after you focus, you can take a 10x pic of a coin, without an expensive macro lens.

P.S. I know that a lot of people do this already. I have posted this for the people who say "I cant take a pic. because I dont have such and such cammera".

FYI , thanks for the information i'll give it a try; as my digital camera does not have a micro option. I do so enjoy exploring the options to recieving end results, that are similar to the otherwise 'traditional' means.

FYI, good information, but whether it will work for any particular and presumably less expensive camera will depend on that camera's focussing capabilities such as focal length, automatic focus function if any, shutter speed, and exposure time, and the size of the magnifying optic, especially a smaller hand lens of, say only 1/2" lens which will have perimeter distortion (might work with a 1" lens). On my old Kodak DX2500, it's focal length was so long (6+" on what passed for its macro setting) that it would require a lot of optical devices and manipulation before it would take satisfactory images of coins... which it never did. I was not willing to invest in various types of magnifying optics beyond what I already have (I have loupes, hand lenses, and magnifying glasses), so I opted to buy a new Canon S2 IS on closeout.

However, that said, I would like to know your type of camera and the specifics of the loupe (or hand lens) that you used. I'm intrigued.
