I found this on Yahoo. Who would abuse coins so?

7 New Uses for a Penny
Clever ways to repurpose an everyday item.

Blasphemy!

1. Curtain Straightener
Make an opening in the bottom hem, slide in a penny or two, and sew the hem back up to keep curtains hanging level and stick-straight.

2. Tread Checker
Insert a penny into a groove of a tire with Lincoln's head pointing into the tire. If the groove covers part of his head, you're safe to drive; if the head is in full view, it's time for new wheels. (The distance between the rim of a penny and Lincoln's head is 1/16 of an inch#8213;the minimum suggested tread depth.)

3. Table Anchor
If you dine out and the table is unsteady, put a coin under the leg to restore balance.

4. Game Token
Misplaced the thimble? No problem. Sub in a cent.

5. Reader Tip: Makeshift Screwdriver
Use a penny to screw open a toy's battery pack.
Caroline Brant, Collegeville, Pennsylvania

6. Reader Tip: Icebreaker
Hand out pennies at your next gathering and ask each guest to share a story that happened during the year his or her penny was minted. If the coin predates a friend, let the person improvise.
Rachel Harrison Massa, Stamford, Connecticut

7. Reader Tip: Birdbath Cleaner
To ward off algae, toss in a few pre-1982 coins; the high copper content retards growth.
Suzanne Wesley, Terre Haute, Indiana

I see noting wrong with doing it to the zinc pennies - they are junk, but I would never desecrate any other US coin, including marking them up like some of these ignoramouses do when they are done searching their half dollars.

I thought that it was larger coins that were used for curtain weights...quarters or other larger coins at least that is what my grandmother used.

So another place to look for silver coins?

My brother, when he was in Sea Cadets used to take wide masking tape, make a line of pennies on it, and sew it into the cuffs of his dress uniform pants to weigh down the pant legs. Apparently, everyone did it.

I have to agree, although they won't do so good for number 7.

At least they can be recovered and reused.
Better than sticking them in some machine that stretches them out of shape.

Dimes work better as screwdrivers.

My favorite use in college was to wedge a few cents in the crack of a door in the dorms. The person in the room cannot open the door if done properly. Tough when you're late for class.

I have been on both ends of that prank; on more that one occasion! I fondly remember the sound of hundreds of cents hitting the floor when my neighbour took their door off the hinges.

That probably works--but don't try this for your aquarium. Fish are highly sensitive to copper compounds and will die.

I won't miss the Zincolns either, excepting the Wide AM, Close AM and other varieties.
