Agosos- haha. That's funny. So did he think that it was actually a large breath mint in a wrapper or did he just think that it was a coin from a very minty-fresh building?

Quote: Nic. We used those Philipine 10 centavos in vending machines on the base and on our ships in the Navy. They worked great for dimes and a great discount for sodas and chips.I still have a few.
That's great halfwitty... but Ouch! it's about the same thing my good friend from Germany told me way back 1992, that a Philippine one peso works well in their vending machines that accepts only 5 German marks! Ouch again! The reason is...when they open up the filled vending machines and find those coins, (thats in Germany) they might be thinking it was a filipino?..once again Ouch! However today, those Philippine coins have been phased out and our present coins are no longer machine compatible with others

I just remembered something that a few weeks ago I bought a few Japanese coins from the early 20th century from a local shop, and while I was looking at them one of the other customers walked up to me. He said "wow, I had no idea that people liked to damage coins like that." I then asked him what he meant. He responded "well, those all have holes in them." I said "why, yes, they do and many countries do or at some point have made coins that have a central hole as part of the design." He then responded "well, if the US even made a coin with a hole it it, then I'd know that the dollar had finally become worthless." Frankly I find it kind of odd that one would equate design features of a type of coin with the true face value of it. I wonder if this guy freaked out when the State Quarters or the colored $20 dollar bills were introduced. haha

Well, I was at a bookstore yesterday and I saw an elderly man looking through a RedBook and a North American Coins & Prices book. He saw me pick up a krause on the shelf and then said to me "I tell ya', coins just aren't what they used to be." He then put the book down and walked away. This just struck me as odd since, of course, Morgans were Morgans and Thalers were Thalers years ago. I just wonder if he was referring to the spike in prices in recent years or commenting on how there have just been too many circulating commemoratives in recent years.

This is an awesome thread. Just last week my lady brought home a bicentenial 2 dollar bill from work. It was pretty mangled up, so I went ahead and used it at our local convenient store. The lady looked at me like I had 2 heads and just frowned. She thought it was one of those gag $3 bills, but looked closer and said she heard that a long long long time ago the U.S. had $2 bills. She accepted it, but was very cautious. That kinda made my day.

Every time one of those commercials for a Commemorative proof eagle, Morgan, or buffalo comes on TV I always hear a comment from various family members,"oh look there's one of those gold coins you have!" . I just shake my head and tell them mine are the real things.

Here's a hilarious one: Yesterday, I was showing my friend ( who is not a collector but his dad is) my 1947 Canadian penny, and then I tell him it's worth 75 cents, but then he says "No! That's worth billions of dollars! Sell it!"

lizzyjo- Actually that raises a good point about dollar coins. I have found that some people who were aware of SBA's refer to all dollar coins as that. I remember a few months ago asking a teller if he had any SBA dollars and he said "Yes, we just got a bunch of them." He then proceeded to hand me a roll of Presidential dollar coins.
