Only played for an hour on Sat as I am not well. Sunday I feel a little better so we went out for another couple of hours. Saturdays site was well searched I think as all we found were Cents. Sundays Site was much better We came up with this pile of treasure and we only searched about 10% of the area. Primary School kids are the best for dropping change...  |

I really want a metal detector but I think everywhere in NEw york is soo settled and no where to look. Are there any maps or something that show like old places in NEw york?

Lax I have yet to move onto historic sites. I do most of my Metal detection in School play areas and city parks. Which I assume are plentifull in NY

I would not recommend Detecting within the bounds of historical sites, but with
Information of where things were, there are often parks schools, or fairgrounds and things of this nature that would
have been encompassed by the original ,settlement,fort,or way station,or any
number of other gathering places from days gone by.
With maps from the calvary,civil war, battlefields can be found, encampments, or homesteads,country stores, schools,post offices, train stations, the list is long what can be discovered with a patient search of the old maps.

I have a question. There is an elementary school right near my house that used to be an old farm. ITs been around since the 50's I think. Do you think anything could be here?

You can get one at RadioShack, Very cheap and good. Especially if youre a beginner.

For all of you that are unaware...please do NOT metal detect in a designated National Historic Site or National Battlefield or any National Park or Recreation area. There are large FINES and jail time for removing artifacts (unearthed or not)! You can't even remove a clump of dirt from any of these. I would also check with the locals and States before entering one of their facilities (Parks and so forth) with a detector. Many of you know this I'm sure but, I'm posting for those that may not be aware.

I guees my grasp of the English language is not what I thought it was by "historic sites" I ment old City parks and fair grounds etc. Also getting permission to search old plantation homes in the area that are still in private hands. I am well aware of the rules regarding State land and national monuments.

Sorry nohope...my focus for the term "historic sites" is more from a National basis as I am a Certified Archivist for the National Park Service. My reference was for National, State and Locally "designated" historically significant sites and arch digs and so forth. I only posted the comments, like I said, for those that may not know or be aware of the restrictions. Also, even though some "old plantations" may be held privately, they still could perhaps be held under "historical" bylaws, rules and regulations in order to obtain and retain their historical designations and so forth. I hope that make's sense. I certainly wasn't pointing any fingers at you, please understand that. Only posting for those that may not know otherwise.
