My husband works retail and brought home a 1990 dime that appears to be entirely copper. There isn't a shred of silver-colored metal to be found on it. It's the color of a brand new penny.
I'm wondering if this is an error...OR if perhaps someone treated it with something.

Looks kind of like a fire coin. I've got some strange colors on some coins that were in fires.

What I find strange is the obverse has 2 feet, the reverse only has one. Hmmm.

If the rims are strong and the devices are strong and not mushy, it could be a dime with both layer missing. But a better image would help. If it was soaked in acid the diameter/devices/thickness/weight would be altered. It just depends on how long it was in the acid. Strong rims/reeding/devices may show it to be the real thing. Just need better images to be sure which you have.

It could have been struck on an improperly annealed planchet. Or it could be plated. Hard to say without better pictures.

I've dug up dimes that look coppery like this one. Possibly a chemical reaction, like a dime dropped into vinegar or lemon juice?

No, steel is not used in US coins except for the 1943 cents. I agree with Conder, everything is just speculation in the absence of a weight. Edited by biokemist6
