I'm not sure I can tell the difference between a small-date and a large-date 1960 cent. Do you seasoned numismatists think this is a small date? It's on a proof set. The gunk is on the packaging.

Nope, it's a large date. On the small date, the 6 is shaped more like a tear drop, with the tail of the 6 pointing more towards the top. Hope this helps. I'll see if I have a pic handy to post.

If I remember rightly, on the small date, you can draw a straight line from the top of the 1 to the top of the 9. On the large date, the 9 sticks up a little higher than the top of the 1. So, I agree with Metalman, small date. Now to go to the RedBook!

It looks like a small date to me.

One fun thing about the 1960 small date is that it was possible (and maybe still is) to pluck them out of circulation.

As a young collector, I spent many enjoyable hours searching through bank rolls for the small date variety. Found quite a few of them too, but they were all from the Denver Mint. Never did find one from the Philly Mint.

It looks like a small date to me. On the large date, the top of the 9 is a little above the 1 which yours is definitely not. Nice find!

OOPS!! I was wrong.Wasn't the first time and surely won't be the last. I made my judgement without consulting any book, just going off of memory, and well, we can see now how good that is!! After looking in the Red Book you definately have a small date. Nice find!
