Hello. I am new to this but found a 10 cent piece this week which looks like it is "peeling" on the rim - what causes this? Is it rare? Secondly I got a 1985 20 cent piece in my change which is an absolute bright, clean, shin silver, the grooves on rim are all still raised and well formed, the edges feel rough though like it has not been filed smooth and check out the weird silver water definition. Is this normal? It looks nothing like any other 20 cent pieces in my wallet. Sorry to waste time if these are very novice points of difference. See pics   |

Hi The 20 cent coin is a proof coin.
The 10 cent,not sure,is it only the rim or does the coin look like it is going to split open ?

So I wonder what a proof coin would be worth? In regards to the 10 cent piece, it is only the rim but from certain angles it is like you can grab it and peel it yet it is completely flush and smooth.

The Proof coin is worth $10 in it's original state,as it has been circulated that wold drop the value. That 10 cent is interesting,it looks like it has taken a fair knock which has broken the rim away & forced it in field if you know what I mean, that may not be the case. I copied your photo & resized it ( hope you don't mind ) to give everyone a better look at it.  |

If it had taken a knock, wouldn't the area 'knocked' have a straight line instead of curved?
My take on it is that possibly the planchet was faulty before the coin was minted, not sure, but I think for a knock to be the cause, it would have been deliberately done by someone with a curved implement.
Do both edges if the 'split' area have milling on them? Any chance of a picture of the affected rim area?

Thanks for all your feedback. As I said I am knew to coins. Having bought some old pennies at a clearing sale a few months back and now have developed an interest in to this fascinating world. I will try and get some better pics of that 10 cent piece up tonight (at work now). It definitely has not been knocked or hit with anything. The split/peeled part has a smooth rim in contrast to the rest of the rim which has the grooves.

Hi nancyc, It does look like a straight edge on the left hand end of the area to me,but since coinboy said it has no milling/reeding on the section in question,it definately sounds like a pre mint or strike problem. Was the reeding done by the collar in those days ? as it is nowadays.  Edited by appleangel07

Ill try and get a better scan/pic of that area tonight once home. Glad it is invoking some discussion though.
