Just commemorating?

"medaille" seems to give it away for me.

Well, if genuine, this medal or token is indeed from 1792 (= L'An IV de la Liberte or Year 4 of the Revolutionary Calendar).
Krause lists this as France 5 sols KM#Tn31

Translation: VIVRE LIBRE OU MOURIR means "To live in liberty or die"

While I know nothing about this medal, it certainly resembles work of that period to my eyes.
Every letter looks individually impressed in the die, with different angles and strike pressure.
I'd think comparing to verified examples should be an easy ID?

I have seen quite a few of these, but have yet to come across a restrike or forgery. There are, I understand, a few varieties of this piece; and sometimes they fetch extraordinary money.
By the way, don't be misled by the use of the word "medaille". These were issued for hard business reasons, as tokens.

According to Richard Doty's book on the SOHO mint, Matthew Boulton's firm produced over 3.8 million 5 sol pieces for the Monneron brothers. Circulated pieces are always available on ebay. I was a bit surprised at the bidding for the one cited. Here's an example of a choice piece purchased for $170.
