I am completely new to coin collecting and I am happy I found this forum. I became interested when my father gave the Half Eagle and am not sure what grade it is. Could anyone help? I will try to take better pictures if needed. I included 2 pictures with a different light exposure. Thanks.

It does appear new or nearly so. Most any decent $5 gold coin has a base value in the area of $400. To get a value much beyond that point, the coin would have to be certified by a reputable service as to authenticity and grade. Info on certification can be found in other areas of the forum.
