Hello,

Here is another Morgan I would like your opinion on grading.

1884-O-Morgan-Grade

Looks like an MS-64 to me. Seller says its a DMPL, but from the pictures he is showing, I am not sure.

64 dmpl seems reasonable it looks the part just make sure you have return privileges in case it is not deeply mirror reflective in hand hard to assess from photos

Photos do show a very nice Cameo effect

How can you measure PL or DMPL surfaces? I think I read on this site that PL is 6-8" while DMPL is 10-12".

Very pretty coin, can't tell if it's DMPL from the photos. I would grade it at MS-65.

Just received the coin, I would say it has PL surfaces (although I am not an expert on PL and DMPL coins). I can see little hair line scratches all over the obverse and reverse, so my guess is the coin may have been cleaned. I wish my camera was back from the repair shop, so I could take pictures.

The coin has a 7 day return policy.

A prooflike coin will often look very scratched in the fields since the mirror surface exposes every flaw.

Hence, it is common for an MS-64 PL to have lots of chatter; not necessarily a sign of cleaning

Deep Mirror proof-Like (DMPL) coins when photographed have a tendency to look black and white due to reflectivity of the fields.

Hairlines will likely keep this coin from grading with a reputable upper tier third party grading company. I would take the seller up on his 7 day return policy.

I am getting mixed signals about the hairlines.

Just an update, on the possible cleaning.

Only the fields have these hairline scratches. I am looking online to see if I can find any pictures, to show you what my coin looks like.

The scratches are also very hard to see, unless held at the right angle under good light.

From the CCF numismatic glossary: Hairlines

Fine cleaning lines found mainly in the fields of Proof coins, although they sometimes are found across an entire Proof coin as well as on business strikes.

If your coin were submitted to an upper tier third party grading company such as PCGS, it would come back tagged 'Genuine'. It would come back this way due to altered surfaces. This is why I would pass on this coin.
