Have just been reorganising my 5c collection and it reminded me of the different 5c reverses for 1984 (small and large), 1985 (small only), 1986 (small and large) and 1987 (large only).
While I have heard of reports of a small reverse for 1987, I have never had this confirmed nor have I ever been able to find one or sight one. Has anyone ever sighted one of these - or a large reverse for 1985 for that matter? (For those who haven't seen these, the terms refer to the distance of the reverse design and the initials 'SD' from the bottom rim - the small reverse is further away).
I would be interested to hear whether anyone has seen the missing reverses from these two particular years.

Here is a list that I put together many moons ago. Can't recall how accurate or up to date it is. Brissyboy will be able to confirm.

Good list - I've never heard of the 1967 missing SD. Will have a look for that.
For the other years, I think it is useful to distinguish between the large SD of 1991-1994 and the large SD of the other years. The years 1991-1994 displayed a unique large SD that has an almost deformed 'S' that is quite angular. The large SD of the other years is larger than the small SD but not as large as the large SD of 1991-1994. Then in 2007 they introduced the tiny SD. All very confusing! It would probably be wise to refer to a tiny SD, a small SD, a medium SD and a large SD (used only for the years 1991-1994). However, there is unfortunately no convention for the naming of these SDs and the whole thing can get quite cumbersome. Suffice to say that it is possible to distinguish a small and a (relatively) large SD for many years but that the large SD for 1991-1994 is quite different. The tiny SD was introduced for a short time in 2007 and then used in 2008. However, from my own observations, the die seems to have reverted to the normal (medium) SD after that - at least until 2011 when the tiny SD occurs once again. Perhaps others have found different SDs for different years from those listed? As I said - it can be very confusing - but if you like these things (as I do) it can also be very interesting!

Nicely put eccentric. I too find it interesting (in a rather crazy way!) Now I will be going blind looking at all the SD's tonight 8-)

I have been buying $50 worth of 5 cent pieces for some time. I search through them for the errors etc and then sort them into dates. I have never taken them bank to the bank (well at least not for nearly two years).
My idea (call me crazy if you will) is to go through each year, lining the coins up, first the reverse and then the obverse and then sort them again into their respective varieties (if they have them. I figure it will be easier to identify the tiny, small, medium and large SDs if I do it that way. Large and small echidnas should be relatively easy to identify. Hopefully I'll find something uncommon. Who knows? I probably have about $2000 already sorted and a couple of hundred yet to do. Job for a rainy day.

Glad my little woman doesn't know about them. I think they'd be stuffed into more than the Christmas pudding! LOL

Interesting: I've been accumulating 5-cents, but haven'y got past sorting by date. There was another thread about this: as I recall, there was a distinction between "high-set" and "low-set" reverses, ie. some were centred; others not, apparently. Yass: "Glad my little woman doesn't know about them ..." I wish I'd followed my Dad's example and stayed a bachelor.

I've been searching myself for 1972 5c, came across one in $160, so I guess they're pretty scarce . I also looked for the high/low Echidna and large/small SD. I found an example of a 1987 high Echidna: How uncommon do you think this variety is?
