I found this variety update fascinating. Has anyone seen this type of situation before? Does it seem more likely than not that they are gas bubbles?

If they are not gas bubbles, doesn't that mean that the lower 4 was engraved on the die, partially polished off, then a new 4 engraved in the right location? Did I get the process right? Probably not. I'm sure I skipped a step or 2.

What do you think happened here?

Looks like gas bubbles and imagination to me.

The overall picture includes a very "bubbly" surface. Also, the angled part of the extra 4 appears to be curved ever so slightly, that would not correspond to a 4. I think the overlay is interesting but I feel that the extra 4 is a figment of the imagination based upon the positions of the plating issues.
