I Just Noticed This About Buffalo Nickels.

TheDanMan Pillar of the Community 527 Posts	Posted 05/01/2011 2:53 pm When I was looking at my three Buffalo nickels that I have, I noticed that they do NOT have the well known motto "In God We Trust" on them, and this is 49 years after the motto first appeared on the Two-cent piece. An Act of Congress on April 22, 1864 allowed the "IN GOD WE TRUST" motto on United States coins. Later after the motto was omitted from the Liberty nickel and some Gold Coins in 1907, another May 18, 1908 Act of Congress clarified the requirement. It was made mandatory on all coins upon which it had previously appeared, and it was not mandatory on the one-cent coin and five-cent coin. However, it could be placed on them by the Mint Secretary or the Mint Director with the Secretary's approval. So, the motto was left off the Buffalo nickel and then reappeared in 1938 on the Jefferson nickel. Since 1938, all United States coins bear the inscription. http://www. biggfredd Rest in Peace United States 9104 Posts	Posted 05/01/2011 3:38 pm Our money was pretty stable when in gold we trust, and rapidly lost over 90% of its value when in god wet rust. This is why it now takes around $40 to buy a real dollar that was available for $1 at any bank as recently as 1960-3. Report this Post to the Staff
jhowefl New Member United States 4 Posts	Posted 05/02/2011 03:25 am Funny thing too, is that when I get my first 1935 Silver Cert. I was like hold on, somethings missing. Turns out, they lacked the motto back then as well. Then I got a 53 Silver Cert and it had the motto, I was like....cool. lol. Report this Post to the Staff
