I was just curious if there were any silver bullion Panda collectors here. I am thinking about starting up a set starting from 1989 to present. I don't know much about them and the varieties but will learn all that in due time. Anyone know any sites with info on them? I would like to get as many proof versions as possible. Additionally, I collect Britannia proofs. I wonder if I should complete that set first? I think a complete set of Pandas from 1989 to present would look amazing! I have a 1/20th gold Panda and a 1 oz silver Panda 2011....
This is is another coin which is sought after, and seems to increase in value rapidly. A smart angle IMO the Panda's are, but be careful as many of the fakes come from China, even though I have not heard of any fake Panda's yet, like another member says, they woudl probably hang you for faking a Panda, lol....

A very popular counterfeit site quite a few of us know about, but which I would rather not name publically has dozens of dealers of fake pandas, often with equally fake certification slabs.

If I had some extra spending money, I would definately be watching that auction. I have almost completed a 1 oz. silver Kookaburra set so I am a little tapped out at the moment. I currently only have a 2011 silver Panda but I have looked in to them a little bit. Quite a few of the older dates have lower mintage rates, some around 50,000 to 120,000. Those coins could get pricey when trying to pick up individually. The best bang for your buck would be trying to pick up a complete set. That being said, one of the fun things about collecting is acquiring pieces one by one and enjoying them and the thrill of the hunt. Getting them all at once is kind of a let down. It's like a euphoric overload with so many coins to try to admire all at once. |

JMerrick - Do you know of any clear differences between the real ones? I bought a panda in a slab just so I'd be more protected... I don't have any cause for concern other than that large # of pandas the seller was selling (which may or may not mean anything).

I have all the Pandas up to 2008, then quit collecting in 2009-2011. Now I'm shocked by the price they're asking. Same with the Kooks. These are extremely popular though, and somebody is buying them.

Here is a link to a very detailed diagnosis for spotting counterfeit silver Pandas. I guess I have been lucky so far. I've scouted out and bought a few dozen on ebay and SO FAR, all are genuine. BTW, I did spot an obvious seller of Panda fakes and reported him to ebay. They veried and removed him as a seller. But.... I'm sure he'll resume his scam with a different ebay ID. Watch out for anyone- especially in China- selling any of the first 3 issues ( 1983, 84 or 85). I watched a lot of suckers paying hundreds of dollars for them. They will never get any coin. I wished I were able to notify them in time. The coins were listed as 1 oz Pandas. There were NO 1 oz Pandas in those years. samwell *** Edited by Staff to remove bold. Please stop. *** |

The China bad boy I reported had over 40 ebay feedbacks but all were for unrelated small junk. None for the high grade early Pandas that some unfortunate buyers sent him money for. Also watch out for sellers that sell slabbed Amer. silver Eagles which have been overgraded- usually MS70- with fuzzy pictures. The slab labels are not by any of the recognized graders even 'tho the initials sound like NGC or PCGS. *** Edited by Staff to remove bold. Please stop. *** |

The crooks are easy to recognize. The problem is with the unsuspecting ebay re-seller who bought a phony at a good price and doesn't know it's a fake. If you have any question about a Panda you can send me a scan and I'll tell you what I think. I have a large collection and I've done much research. |

I have a couple of the silver 1 oz pandas. I really like them buy they are expensive. I've just been buying them at my local coin store so they can filter out all the fakes. Haven't been brave enough to get one on ebay yet. I see a lot of fakes on ebay from Chinese sellers. But most of the fakes I have seen have been pretty obvious so who knows. |

There are TONS of fake pandas out there in all grades of all varieties as China is fake capital of the world. I absolutely love them however you've gotta be quite careful.
