Hi all. I have over 800 wheat cents that I have to sell for my bosses mother. There are lots of copies, mostly 40's and 50's. I know that you can usually pick these things up at coin shops for 10¢ a piece. What would be the best way to sell these things off? ebay is ok if I want to be one of those people who sell them off for $5 a half pound but I just don't want to do that. Or should I just sell them all at once and take whatever loss that might incur? I am open to any and all suggestions. How much does 800 pennies weigh? |

you could try rolling them up and selling them in rolls of assorted dates. Have you checked for the key dates yet?

800 (/) 155(per pre 1982)a pound = 5.161 Lbs. 155 'copper' cents per pound (x) multiply by 800 (count)= 5.161 pounds.

I just bought 8 pounds of wheats 30's-50's for $45.00.00+13.00 for S&H.
Maybe I paid to much ...hmmm. That's $7.20 a pound if you include shipping in the final cost.

Sell them all together as one lot and ship them in a flat-rate priority box. That way, the actual shipping is only $9.10 and it won't be cost prohibitive even with handling added. We're going to be doing the same thing soon with 20+ pounds of them.  |

If you have time look through them for error coins such as double dies, offsets, rotated reverses, RPM's and just lots of other stuff. Around here the basic ones sell for only 0.03 each. Occationally for 0.04 and seldom more than that. They are so common that myself and a few dealers I know take a bunch to a bank mixed in with regular stuff and try imagining the surprize look on someones face when they find them. If you want to save a lot of trouble and time for such a little profit, just mix them up with a bunch of other cents and give away for holloween, have a giveaway here for some YN's or donate then to the Salvation Army.

Nothing is worth more than what it actually sells for. Complete research to me includes the Red Book, CDN (Greysheet), and auction histories. The auction histories, when well researched, will give you the real value of a coin. ebay is a good starting place, but not the end all and be all. Use the advanced search option and look up completed items. Google "coin auction" for more auctions that you can research. Yahoo auctions also has some good activity. By the time your are finished looking at these resources and putting together the research, the fair price will be evident! Cheers! |

I suppose it depends how much you like your boss  . You could try a dutch auction if you wanted to do smaller lots. |

I think I am going to sell them all at once. Try to do like Susan said and ship them in a Priority box to cut down on the cost of shipping.
Start them out in the auction section here first to give the members a chance at them if they would like.

You only need to be a member to buy coins on the forum, the post requirement of 50 posts to to sell or trade .
If your interested in the wheaties bid away !!
The different regulation is due to the fact that the Item or Items do not have to be shipped until payment is received by the seller.
