Hi everyone, I'm new to the community and to coin collecting as well. I started with a 1996 proof toonie and have been able to add a few more dates to my collection.
I was under the assumption that all proof coins made recently were of silver content, Am I wrong? Are only selected toonie dates made with silver?

Thank you in advance

and enjoy comments. To answer your question, not all $2 proof are made of silver.Starting in 1996 4 different proof were issued.1-nickel/bronze 2-silver/gilt 3-silver/gilt piedfort and 4 gold/gold.In 1999 and 2000 again silver/gilt and gold/gold.All $2 from the proof sets are silver with gold plated center core.Hope this helps

Hi cdcoinman, thank you for the help I really appreciate it. so just to clarify from 1996 to present there are those 4 types of 2$ proofs made. Is there an easy way to tell nickel / bronze from the silver / glit.

Gold $2 were issued as stated in 1996,1999,2000 and 2006.The easiest way to identify the gold pieces is the price .They will never be for sale for $30 but rather at least 10 times that. They also will be offerrd in the original case with the certificate from the Mint.
The silver one are often from broken proof sets and are offered as a single coin.Looking at the picture on the net,you cannot tell the difference.
The weight is also different but you have to have one in hand to check.Silver is 8.83gr and Gold is 11.40gr.
