Hello,

We (my husband, actually) have found a nickel that only has the tails "side" on both sides of the coin. It is a picture of Monticello. Is this a common error for that nickel? We've certainly never seen anything like it before.

We would appreciate your opinion.

Welcome to the forum!

What you have there is probably a novelty or "magician's" coin. No numismatic value, but a neat piece just the same.
Rest in Peace

Thanks for the responses! Of course, my husband was hoping that it was a "real" rare coin...LOL It looks like an actual coing and it was found in a roll of nickels he got from the bank. He likes to get the rolls and look through them for the years he needs for his collections.

The easiest way to tell if the coin is real is to drop in on a table. Magician coins will not "ring", but give a dead thud. If you have a good loupe, check around the rim for the small cut. The process in making them is quite interesting. They sell for around $3 at all the major shows.
