Hello everyone, I am a new member to these forums, and a novice to coin collecting. Over the last few days I have been reading about coin collecting and about how to detect fakes. I went over to ebay after doing some research and looked up specific rare dates that scammers frequently counterfeit to see if I could spot a fake. The reason I think this one is fake is because the letters and numbers seem thinner than normal. Can the more experienced coin collectors on this forum tell me if my assumption is correct?

Thanks.

Hard to tell by the images, it does not look like your typical Chinese counterfeit (but the nose does not look right). Generally speaking, I would avoid any ebay seller from China when it comes to key date Canadian coins.

Looking at the scans, it appears to be real and there are no typical details on the coin that are consistent with with previously known fakes. The seller all has a perfect Feedback score, however, the '48 dollar is a common coin on E-bay and can very easily be obtained from a known Canadian dealer.
I would be on the safe side and buy from inside Canada rather than risking foreign. (+ why would you want a cleaned coin anyway? It's already lost half it's value!)

It wouldn't hurt to submit an offer. An offer comfortable with the location risk. I'll bet someone will.

@glenzy1: Which should scare the heck out of anyone if it is fake.

@SPP-Ottawa: The nose caught my attention too. Like George had been overdrinking for a decade.
