That's in beautiful shape! Did you notice the off-center die clash?
There are impressions of denticles through the group of birds.

American Civil War 1861 - 1865 did you mean a different civil war? Your coin is dated 1844 I'm confused.
Thanks Biokemist6 for the question mark. Made me look it up.

A beautiful specimen. The 1844 date is significant in that the range of years for tokens known as Hard Times Tokens ends in 1844. The 1844 dated design does show in Rulau's book "US Civil War Store Cards",however the reverse of your token does not seem to be included. This one will take a bit more work to identify methinks.

This is truly a beautiful specimen, illustrating fine engraving amidst a great patina. Interestingly, the reverse die was delisted as a patriotic die in the 1982 Fuld patriotic token book. Yet, the 1844 die was retained! Thus, for almost thirty years now, this die combination has apparently been considered non-contemporary; this, with reference to the Civil war years. It was thought that these dies were intended for use on buttons. The anchor, rope and HOPE are identified with the Rhode Island State Seal.

P.S. - Hey Cointagous, great pics!

Thank you Exoguy!

The info you provided is the most I've found so far.
the piece comes from the dealers Father's collection.
I'm HONORED to add this R.8 to my collection.

When I went to that website I was drooling all over their collection of pre civil war tokens in their gallery. The toning is just amazing on some of these. The Pioneer baseball club medal still eludes me....

It makes sense that this token was housed in a collection in the New England area; this, given its probable Rhode Island provenance as product of an unknown die sinker. These great pics are comparable to those that Cointagous provides in his threads. Thanks for sharing the joy of this great acquisition!

I'm guessing that the 1844 die will eventually be delisted from the Civil War token series, but if so, that certainly doesn't detract from the beauty of this specimen.
